Fa La La La La: Holiday Costs Decline

Chart of the Week for December 20-26, 2002

According to data recently released by PNC Advisors, two of thirteen holiday sectors declined significantly this year over last. A glut of swans-a-swimming and pear trees resulted in deep discounts, -40% and -30% respectively, as retailers slashed prices to reduce inventory. The slight increases earned by other sectors were not able to overcome this decline resulting in a 7.6% drop in overall holiday costs this year. Ex-swans, however, the “core” index rose 1.7%.

Perhaps reflective of the soft labor market, only leaping lords and dancing ladies managed an increase over last year. Maids, pipers and drummers have to make do with last year’s wages. Not surprising, given the recent bear market, gold (rings) garnered a slight increase.

Interestingly, ordering online provides no discount due to shipping fees. For the convenience of ordering by computer, you’ll have to pay an additional $10,037.

Happy Holidays!
